Your new passport can be renewed up to six months before the expiry date. It is exclusive responsibility of the passport holder to have a passport valid for any need and to make arrangements to apply for a new passport in due time, in case. Please note urgency procedures are limited to very specific requirements (see here).
The passport office receives by appointment only to be booked through the Prenot@Mi booking system.
The appointment will take place at the Consulate General of Italy in Edinburgh (32 Melville Street, EH3 7HA – Edinburgh).
You can request an appointment with the Honorary Consul in Belfast, Aberdeen and Glasgow to give your fingerprints for the issue of a biometric passport.
The appointment must be agreed directly with the relevant Honorary Consul, to b econtacted directly per e-mail. An appointment will be given only after the Consulate has checked that the application can be accepted.
The MAECI has provided the Honorary Consuls with an equipment for the acquisition of biometric data only. The Consulate will receive the biometric data from the Honorary Consuls and then issue the passport.

Other departments of the Consulate can provide services that don’t require an appointment or that can be completed by post.
An Italian passport is valid for travel to all countries whose government are recognized by the Italian government. We now only issue biometric passports containing an electronic microchip which holds your personal details, your photograph and your fingerprints. We don’t need to collect fingerprints if you’re applying for a child under the age of 12 or if you’re permanently unable to travel.
Who can apply for an Italian passport?
You must have Italian nationality to be eligible for an Italian passport.
You must be resident in Scotland or Northern Ireland and be registered with the Italian Consulate in Edinburgh (A.I.R.E or Anagrafe Italiani Residenti all’Estero). For information on how to register in A.I.R.E (click HERE)
If you are not registered with the Italian Consulate in Edinburgh, you can still apply but only under specific circumstances (art 7, Legge 21 novembre 1967, n.1185). Your passport will only be issued if the competent Italian authorities authorise us to do so. After you have submitted your application, the process can take up to 30 days.
PLEASE NOTE
If you:
- were born outside of Italy
- obtained Italian citizenship in Italy or from an Italian Consulate/Embassy outside of Scotland
- obtained Italian citizenship by marriage in Italy or from an Italian Consulate/Embassy outside of Scotland
you are strongly advised to check that your birth certificate has been registered at your town hall (comune) of reference in Italy, even if you have been issued with an Italian passport in the past. If you haven’t registered your birth certificate in Italy, you should provide a legalized* original birth certificate (full extract) together with your passport application.
