ESSENTIAL INFORMATION

 

The information outlined below and in all the pages of the visa section of this website may be subject to change without prior notice. No liability can be accepted for the consequences of such changes.

 

PLEASE NOTE:

  • Applicants must appear in person, either at the Consulate or at VFS;
  • Please, make sure you have all paperwork complete and in order before coming to the visa office to apply for the type of visa you wish to request. All documents must be printed out and presented in original plus a photocopy where required. This Consular office does not make photocopies on your behalf; VFS may charge for photocopy service;
  • Your application must be submitted complete with all required documents as listed in the relevant visa category (see menu on the left). If essential documents are missing the applicant might be required to reschedule a new appointment;
  • This consular administration has full authority to evaluate and request additional documentation in addition to what has been submitted, if deemed necessary. Furthermore, the applicant, is hereby informed that submitting all the required documentation, does not guarantee the issuance of any particular visa.

1) FORMS

All forms must be accompanied by a photocopy of the signee’s passport or ID (inclusive of page with signature) and, if applicable, photocopy of Residence Permit/Card. For downloading one of the following application forms click HERE:

  • Schengen visa (C Type)

2) PASSPORTS AND TRAVEL DOCUMENTS

  1. Before applying for your visa, make sure your passport or travel document have a validity of at least three months beyond the last day of your trip in the Schengen Area;
  2. Your passport or travel document must have at least two empty ‘VISA’ pages. The passport will be kept and returned with the visa, if approved.
  3. Your passport or travel document will be kept and returned with the visa, if approved;
  4. Citizens of Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iraq, Palestine, Yemen and Travel Documents Holders (with the three letters code XXA or XXB appearing in the ICAO), need to provide an original birth certificate (with Apostille/legalisation by the competent authority of the issuing country) or Consular declaration indicating full names and surname of both mother and father. For certificates issued in a language different from English, see point 3) b) below.

3) U.K. RESIDENCE PERMIT/CARD

  1. U.K. Residence Permit/Card must be valid for at least 3 months beyond the return date of the trip;
  2. If the U.K. Residence Permit/Card expires less than 3 months after returning from the Schengen area, a travel tickets reservation in the applicant’s name to their home country must be submitted;
  3. Holders of a U.K. C-visit visa are NOT eligible to apply for a visa at this Consulate.

5) CERTIFICATES

  1. Marriage/civil partnership certificates older than 6 months will NOT be accepted;
  2. Certificates issued in a language different from English, MUST be translated into English or Italian and the translation must be certified by the Italian Consular Office in the issuing Country OR by the Consular Authority of the issuing Country in the U.K.;
  3. Certificates issued by one of the Schengen countries will be accepted only if in multilingual format, otherwise please refer to point b);
  4. If not issued by one of the Schengen countries, certificates MUST be Apostilled/legalised by the competent authority of the issuing country.

6) BANK STATEMENT

  1. Last three months bank statements, not older than 30 days from the day of submission;
  2. Bank statements must show: your source of income (salary, pension, dividends, etc. – if self employed you must also include your business account); your name and surname; address; account details and balance;
  3. Balance must show enough funds for the whole stay as per Ministry of Interior Directive 1.3.2000, Table A (click HERE).

7) TRAVEL TICKETS

  1. If traveling by plane, train or bus the ticket must be printed directly from the airline/train line/bus operator showing: passenger name and surname, dates of travel, from/to and paid price;
  2. If traveling by car, ferry tickets or Euro Tunnel, travel ticket reservations are required, alongside with: car registration (original & photocopy), car insurance (original & photocopy), driving license (original & photocopy); if you are renting a car the same documentation is required plus the car rentals documents (original & photocopy);
  3. If traveling among multiple Schengen countries, travel tickets are mandatory between each single country;
  4. If using the services of third parties, such as travel agencies, note that they will be accepted only if they are based in the U.K. or in one of the Schengen countries. Travel ticket reservations must always be issued from the airline/train line/bus operator themselves and any other paper will not be considered. This applies to points a), b) and c).

8) PROOF OF ACCOMMODATION

  1. Hotel booking reservations for the whole stay, every single night must be booked in a hotel unless you are travelling and have a travel ticket proving it;
  2. Hotel bookings must show the applicant’s name as a guest;
  3. If staying with friends or family in Italy they must supply a Sponsorship and/or accommodation form (click HERE), duly completed in all sections, dated and signed together with a photocopy of the host’s ID/passport showing the signature. If the host in Italy is a non-EU citizen, a copy of the host’s Residence Permit in Italy is also required;
  4. Proof of accommodation in the name of the applicant must be provided for all destinations within the Schengen area;
  5. For long stay visas (D Type): proof of ownership, signed rental agreement or university letter confirming the allocation of a student accommodation. In case the applicant is staying with friends/family refer to point c).

9) TRAVEL INSURANCE

  1. Must be issued in the U.K. or in one of the Schengen countries;
  2. Must be valid throughout the whole Schengen area covering a minimum of €30,000 for emergency hospitalisation and repatriation expenses in the case of illness, injury or death;
  3. Must cover the whole period of stay in the Schengen area, if applying for multiple entry visas it is highly advisable to have an insurance that covers all intended travels;
  4. Insurance certificate as well as the summary of the policy (table of benefits) must be supplied;
  5. For D type study visa only: a special insurance policy for student with INA ASSITALIA is available through Universities upon arrival in Italy. If applicable, this insurance cover must be specified in the acceptance letter from the Italian university. Alternatively, if eligible, you may opt to register with the Italian National Health System (SSN) upon arrival, please note failure to register will result in your application for a residence permit to be rejected (if choosing this last option, a signed declaration of intent must be submitted to the Consulate).

10) RETURN ENVELOPE

  1. Passports will be returned by post ONLY as neither the Consulate nor VFS operate a collection service;
  2. For applications submitted at the VFS centres you will have the opportunity to purchase a courier service;
  3. For applications submitted at the Visa Office of this Consulate General you must provide:
    1. a self-addressed pre-paid envelope (up to 500g, please make sure the stamp can be used anytime and NOT only on the day of purchase);
    2. assumption of responsibility for posting passports from [click HERE].

11) FEES

  1. All payments are due in GBP;
  2. Fees will vary depending on the quarterly exchange rate, click HERE for exact amount;
  3. If applying directly at the Consulate, fees can be paid in cash only;
  4. Please note the service provided by VFS incurs an extra cost (see HERE).

12) MINORS

  1. If one or both parents do not appear in person on the application day, a parental consent notarised by a U.K. notary is mandatory (click HERE to download a form);
  2. If the parents live abroad, the consent must be notarised by the Italian Consulate in their country of residence (for more information, please click HERE). This also applies when parents living abroad nominate a guardian;
  3. A photocopy of both parents’ passport or ID (inclusive of page with signature) and, if applicable, photocopy of Residence Permit/Card.
