The application must be signed in front of the Consular officer during the appointment at the Consulate. Consular fees for the legalization of the applicant\u2019s signature on the application will apply (Art. 24 \u2013 see\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/consedimburgo.esteri.it\/en\/servizi-consolari-e-visti\/servizi-per-il-cittadino-italiano\/548-2\/\"><strong>Consular Fees<\/strong><\/a>).<\/li>\n<li><b>ORIGINAL BIRTH, MARRIAGE AND DEATH CERTIFICATES<br \/>\n<\/b>Original certificates of the last person\/ancestor born in Italy. <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Note<\/span>: The ancestor\u2019s birth certificate must be issued by the\u00a0<em>Comune<\/em> of origin in Italy and must include the indication of the parents&#8217; names.<b><br \/>\n<\/b><\/li>\n<li><strong>DECLARATION<\/strong> <strong>FROM LOCAL AUTHORITIES<\/strong><br \/>\nA declaration from the local authorities in the country of residence of the last person born in Italy, confirming that they never naturalized in that country, or indicating the date of naturalization. The declaration must include a search for all alternative names\/spellings as they appear on all other submitted certificates. If naturalization occurred, the declaration should specify the date, and the applicant must provide an original naturalization certificate.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>For the UK, this declaration can be obtained for the period from 1844 to September 1986 from\u00a0<em>The National Archives\u00a0<\/em>(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalarchives.gov.uk\/\">www.nationalarchives.gov.uk<\/a>);<\/li>\n<li>For the period after 1 October 1986 (if next ancestor is born after this date), contact the Home Office (<a href=\"mailto:ukbanationalityenquiries@ukba.gsi.gov.uk\">ukbanationalityenquiries@ukba.gsi.gov.uk<\/a>);<br \/>\n<strong>Note<\/strong>: If the ancestor naturalized in the country of emigration before the next descendant was born or during the next descendant&#8217;s minor age, the applicant does not qualify for Italian citizenship. Similarly, if any ancestor renounced their Italian citizenship before the birth of the next descendant or during the next descendant&#8217;s minor age, the applicant does not qualify for Italian citizenship.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>ORIGINAL BIRTH, MARRIAGE AND DEATH CERTIFICATES<\/strong><br \/>\nOriginal certificates for all descendants in the line leading to the applicant, including the applicant&#8217;s birth certificate and, if applicable, marriage\/s and\/or divorce certificates.<br \/>\n<strong>WARNING<\/strong>: applicants who have changed their name and\/or surname for any reason (including marriage) must submit a birth certificate with the annotation of the name\/surname change officially recorded on their birth entry by the competent authority of the country of issue.<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>PLEASE NOTE: if <\/strong>the name\/s and surname\/s <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">on your birth certificate<\/span> <strong>do not\u00a0exactly match <\/strong>the name\/s and surname\/s <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">on your passport<\/span>, you will not be able to submit your application.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong>ORIGINAL BIRTH CERTIFICATES<\/strong> (if applicable)<br \/>\nOriginal birth certificates for all children under 18 years of age living with the applicant.<\/li>\n<li><strong>APPLICANT\u2019S PASSPORT<\/strong><br \/>\nThe applicant\u2019s passport must be valid on the day of submission (original and photocopy of pages showing photo and signature).<\/li>\n<li><strong>BRITISH RESIDENCE PERMIT<\/strong>, <strong>UK WORKING VISA<\/strong> or <strong>SETTLED\/PRE SETTLED STATUS<\/strong><br \/>\nAn original and photocopy of the applicant\u2019s British Residence Permit, UK Working Visa, or Settled\/Pre-settled Status, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">with at least 3 years\u2019 validity from the date of submission<\/span>. Holders of Tourist Visas, Student Visas, or Working Holiday Visas (WHV)\u00a0<strong>cannot<\/strong>\u00a0apply for citizenship through this office.<\/li>\n<li><strong>SPOUSE AND CHILDREN UNDER 18 <\/strong>(if applicable)<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong>Photocopy of the passport of the applicant\u2019s spouse and all children under 18 years of age living with the applicant.<\/li>\n<li><strong>PROOF OF ADDRESS<\/strong><br \/>\nA utility bill, council tax statement, bank statement, etc., dated no more than three months prior to the appointment.<\/li>\n<li><strong>CONSULAR FEES<\/strong><br \/>\nConsular fees of \u20ac600.00, to be paid (in GBP) on the day of the appointment in cash or by Postal Order (Art. 7b \u2013 see <a href=\"https:\/\/consedimburgo.esteri.it\/en\/servizi-consolari-e-visti\/servizi-per-il-cittadino-italiano\/548-2\/\"><strong>Consular Fees<\/strong><\/a>).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>IMPORTANT INFORMATION<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>All of the above certificates and the Declaration (except for the birth certificate issued in Italy) must be submitted in <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">original<\/span> and must be l<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">egalized with an Apostille<\/span> and accompanied by a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">certified translation<\/span> into Italian.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Apostille:<\/strong> The Hague Convention of 05\/10\/1961 requires apostilles for all documents issued by countries listed\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hcch.net\/en\/states\/hcch-members\"><strong>HERE<\/strong><\/a>. If the issuing country is not on the list, documents must be legalized by the Italian Consulate or Embassy in the country of issue.<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Sworn Translations<\/strong>: Translations into Italian carried out by a professional translator often require legalization or apostille. In countries like the UK, where sworn translators are not recognized, translations must be certified as follows:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>by the Consulate General of Italy in Edinburgh, for UK certificates only (see <a href=\"https:\/\/consedimburgo.esteri.it\/en\/servizi-consolari-e-visti\/servizi-per-il-cittadino-italiano\/traduzione-e-legalizzazione-dei-documenti\/\"><strong>HERE<\/strong><\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>for certificates issued in other countries, contact the relevant Italian Consulate or Embassy in the country of issue for instructions (find your consulate <a href=\"https:\/\/serviziconsolarionline.esteri.it\/ScoFE\/services\/consulate\/find-consulate.sco\"><strong>HERE<\/strong><\/a>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Certificates submitted for the recognition of citizenship by descent do not have an expiration date.<\/li>\n<li>All documentation submitted will not be returned, regardless of the outcome.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Italian Citizenship and Maternal Line<\/strong>: An Italian mother can only transfer her Italian citizenship to children born on or after 01\/01\/1948.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Processing Time<\/strong>: The process can take up to two years from the date of submission to be finalized (DPM \u00a03\/3\/2011, n. 90, see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gazzettaufficiale.it\/eli\/id\/2014\/03\/18\/14G00045\/sg\">HERE<\/a> and Legge 7\/08\/1990, n. 241 art. 2, comma 6, see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.normattiva.it\/uri-res\/N2Ls?urn:nir:stato:legge:1990-08-07;241\">HERE<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Appointment Required<\/strong>: Applicants must attend the Consulate in person (by appointment only).
