{"id":6773,"date":"2026-03-04T13:25:38","date_gmt":"2026-03-04T12:25:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/consedimburgo.esteri.it\/?page_id=6773"},"modified":"2026-03-25T13:47:16","modified_gmt":"2026-03-25T12:47:16","slug":"italian-parent-with-at-least-two-years-residency-in-italy","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/consedimburgo.esteri.it\/en\/servizi-consolari-e-visti\/servizi-per-il-cittadino-straniero\/cittadinanza\/cittadinanza-per-discendenza-jure-sanguinis\/italian-parent-with-at-least-two-years-residency-in-italy\/","title":{"rendered":"Italian parent with at least two years&#8217; residency in Italy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>A FIRST-DEGREE ITALIAN\u00a0ASCENDANT (PARENT) HAS RESIDED IN ITALY FOR TWO CONSECUTIVE YEARS AFTER ACQUIRING ITALIAN CITIZENSHIP AND BEFORE THE BIRTH OF THE CHILD<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To submit an application, applicants must provide the following:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>APPLICATION FORM <\/strong>(<strong>MOD C<\/strong>\u00a0see\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/consedimburgo.esteri.it\/en\/servizi-consolari-e-visti\/servizi-per-il-cittadino-italiano\/modulistica\/\"><strong>Forms<\/strong><\/a>) duly filled in but\u00a0<strong>not signed<\/strong>. The form must be signed\u00a0<strong>in person<\/strong>\u00a0before a consular officer on the day of the appointment. The relevant fee for the legalization of the signature must also be paid (art. 24 \u2013 see\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/consedimburgo.esteri.it\/en\/servizi-consolari-e-visti\/servizi-per-il-cittadino-italiano\/548-2\/\"><strong>Fees<\/strong><\/a>);<\/li>\n<li><strong>ORIGINAL CERTIFICATES <\/strong>of\u00a0<u>birth<\/u>,\u00a0<u>marriage\/civil union<\/u>, and\u00a0<u>death<\/u>\u00a0(if applicable) of the Italian\u00a0<strong>parent<\/strong> of the applicant issued by the relevant Italian Municipality &#8211; or Municipalities. <em><strong>Note:<\/strong> Make sure the birth certificate is a full version that includes the parents\u2019 names;<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>HISTORICAL RESIDENCY CERTIFICATE <\/strong>issued by the relevant Italian Municipality (or Municipalities) showing <u>at least two years\u2019 residency<\/u> in Italy of the <strong>Italian\u00a0parent<\/strong> after acquiring Italian citizenship and before the birth of the child;<\/li>\n<li><strong>DECLARATION OF NON-NATURALIZATION<\/strong>* issued by the authorities of every country where the\u00a0<strong>parent <\/strong>resided (as indicated in the Historical Residency Certificate). For the United Kingdom, the declaration must be obtained from The National Archives for the period 1844\u2013September 1986, from the Home Office UK Border Agency for the period after October 1, 1986. The declaration MUST explicitly include all variations and spellings of the names as they appear in the rest of the documentation.\n<ul>\n<li>If the Italian parent acquired any foreign citizenship before the birth of the applicant, the applicant is not eligible for Italian citizenship recognition.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>ORIGINAL FULL EXTRACT BIRTH CERTIFICATE<\/strong>* of the\u00a0<strong>applicant<\/strong>, and if applicable, original certificates of\u00a0<u>marriage*\/civil union*<\/u>and\/or\u00a0<u>divorce*<\/u>\u00a0(for information on how to submit divorce rulings, see\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/consedimburgo.esteri.it\/en\/servizi-consolari-e-visti\/servizi-per-il-cittadino-italiano\/stato-civile\/riconoscimento-sentenza-di-divorzio-scozzese\/\"><strong>HERE<\/strong><\/a>).<br \/>\n<strong>Note:<\/strong>\u00a0Applicants who have changed their surname due to marriage (or for any other reason) must submit a birth certificate that includes the\u00a0<u>annotation of the name change<\/u>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>UK citizens <u>born in Scotland\u00a0<\/u>whose passport details differ from their birth certificate must request an annotation of the name change on the birth record by contacting the\u00a0<strong>National Records of Scotland<\/strong>\u00a0at:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/consedimburgo.esteri.it\/it\/servizi-consolari-e-visti\/servizi-per-il-cittadino-straniero\/cittadinanza\/cittadinanza-per-matrimonio-unione-civile-con-cittadino-a-italiano-a\/namechange@nrscotland.gov.uk\">namechange@nrscotland.gov.uk<\/a>\u00a0(Request Form 24, reason:\u00a0<em>Italian Citizenship Application<\/em>).<\/li>\n<li>UK citizens\u00a0<u>born in England <\/u>must provide proof that the Deed Poll was registered with the High Court, with apostille and certified translation.<\/li>\n<li>Non-UK citizens must present a birth certificate\u00a0<u>with name change annotations<\/u> issued by the competent authorities of the country that issued the birth certificate.<br \/>\n<strong>WARNING<\/strong>:\u00a0<strong>If<\/strong>\u00a0the personal details (first and last names) on the birth certificate do not\u00a0<u>exactly<\/u>\u00a0match those on the passport, the application will not be accepted.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>PROOF OF ADDRESS\u00a0<\/strong>of the <strong>applicant:<\/strong>\u00a0utility bill, council tax statement, bank statement, letter from GP or NHS \u2013 not older than 3 months from the date of the appointment;<\/li>\n<li><strong>VALID PASSPORT <\/strong>of the\u00a0<strong>applicant<\/strong>\u00a0(original + photocopy of pages with photo and signature);\n<ul>\n<li>If applicable (EU and non EU citizens) valid\u00a0<strong>RESIDENCE PERMIT<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>WORKING VISA\u00a0<\/strong>in the UK or\u00a0<strong>SETTLED STATUS<\/strong>(original + photocopy)\u00a0<u>valid for at least 3 years from the date of the appointment<\/u>. Applicants with a tourist visa, student visa, Working Holiday Visa (WHV), or Pre-Settled Status are\u00a0<u>not eligible<\/u>\u00a0to apply at this Consulate General.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>CONSULAR FEE <\/strong>of\u00a0<strong>\u20ac600.00<\/strong>, to be paid in GBP on the day of the appointment, cash or debit card only (art. 7b \u2013 see\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/consedimburgo.esteri.it\/en\/servizi-consolari-e-visti\/servizi-per-il-cittadino-italiano\/548-2\/\"><strong>Fees<\/strong><\/a>).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>PLEASE NOTE:\u00a0<\/strong><u>All<\/u>\u00a0certificates marked with an asterisk (*) must be\u00a0<u>original<\/u>,\u00a0<u>legalized<\/u>, and\u00a0<u>translated<\/u>\u00a0into Italian.<\/p>\n<p>Legalization via apostille is required if the issuing country is a party to the Hague Convention of 05\/10\/1961. For countries not party to the Hague Convention, documents must be legalized by the relevant Italian Embassy\/Consulate.<\/p>\n<p>Italian translations must be completed by a sworn translator, and the translation must be legalized or apostilled by the relevant authorities.<br \/>\nIn the UK, where sworn translators do not exist, translations must be duly certified. Certification options:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>At the Italian Consulate General in Edinburgh \u2013 only for translations of certificates issued by UK authorities. (More info\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/consedimburgo.esteri.it\/en\/servizi-consolari-e-visti\/servizi-per-il-cittadino-italiano\/traduzione-e-legalizzazione-dei-documenti\/\"><strong>HERE<\/strong><\/a>);<\/li>\n<li>or certificates issued by other countries: through the Italian Embassy\/Consulate responsible for the country of issue. (Find a list of Italian Consulates and Embassies\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/serviziconsolarionline.esteri.it\/ScoFE\/services\/consulate\/find-consulate.sco\"><strong>HERE<\/strong><\/a>).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>IMPORTANT:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Each applicant must provide <u>all<\/u> original documentation for their own citizenship application.<\/li>\n<li>Certificates used for citizenship recognition do not expire.<\/li>\n<li><u>Original documents will not be returned<\/u>, regardless of the outcome of the application.<\/li>\n<li>Italian women can transmit citizenship only from January 1, 1948, based on a Constitutional Court ruling.<\/li>\n<li>As provided for by the amended Article 10, paragraph 7, of Legislative Decree No. 71 of 3 February 2011, the processing of the application may take up to three years to be completed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>APPOINTMENT REQUIRED:<\/strong> Applicants must appear in person at the Consulate by appointment only.
