{"id":7993,"date":"2026-08-21T16:54:34","date_gmt":"2026-08-21T14:54:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/consedimburgo.esteri.it\/?page_id=7993"},"modified":"2026-08-21T17:02:23","modified_gmt":"2026-08-21T15:02:23","slug":"how-to-register-a-cohabitation-agreement","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/consedimburgo.esteri.it\/en\/servizi-consolari-e-visti\/servizi-per-il-cittadino-italiano\/anagrafe-degli-italiani-residenti-allestero-aire\/how-to-register-a-cohabitation-agreement\/","title":{"rendered":"How to register a Cohabitation Agreement"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"PDq2pG_selectionAnchorContainer\" data-start=\"0\" data-end=\"128\">The legal status of a Cohabitation Agreement allows two people to acquire reciprocal rights to assistance and material support.<br \/>\nA Cohabitation Agreement may be established by <strong data-start=\"176\" data-end=\"206\">two adult Italian citizens<\/strong>, including persons of the same sex, provided that they:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"264\" data-end=\"463\">\n<li data-section-id=\"zlgulr\" data-start=\"264\" data-end=\"382\">are permanently bound by <strong data-start=\"291\" data-end=\"340\">a couple relationship based on emotional ties<\/strong> and mutual moral and material assistance;<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"l49bhi\" data-start=\"383\" data-end=\"409\"><strong data-start=\"385\" data-end=\"408\">permanently live together<\/strong>;<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"8xjdxm\" data-start=\"410\" data-end=\"463\">are registered with the <strong data-start=\"436\" data-end=\"462\">same AIRE municipality<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"465\" data-end=\"655\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">In addition, the two citizens must not be married to, or in a civil partnership with, each other or with other persons, nor may they be related to each other by blood, marriage, or adoption.<\/p>\n<p>Italian nationals residing in this consular district who wish to register their Cohabitation Agreement should send the following documents to this Consulate General:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Affidavit for the registration of a Cohabitation Agreement (see <a href=\"https:\/\/consedimburgo.esteri.it\/en\/servizi-consolari-e-visti\/servizi-per-il-cittadino-italiano\/modulistica\/\">Forms<\/a>), signed by both concerned persons.<\/li>\n<li>Recent proof of address for both citizens.<\/li>\n<li>A photocopy of the passports or valid identity cards of the concerned persons.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Residence Office<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>CONSULATE GENERAL OF ITALY<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Italy House<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>20-22 East London Street<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Edinburgh \u2013 EH7 4BQ<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Any change to the Cohabitation Agreement should be reported to the Consulate, including its termination (use the Affidavit for the termination of Cohabitation Agreement \u2013 see <a href=\"https:\/\/consedimburgo.esteri.it\/en\/servizi-consolari-e-visti\/servizi-per-il-cittadino-italiano\/modulistica\/\">Forms<\/a>).<br \/>\nPlease note that even a change of address by one of the cohabitants will result in the termination of the Cohabitation Agreement.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The legal status of a Cohabitation Agreement allows two people to acquire reciprocal rights to assistance and material support.
