Starting from 1st June 2026, Italian citizens registered in the Anagrafe degli Italiani Residenti all’Estero (AIRE – Registry of Italians Residing Abroad) may apply for the issuance of an Electronic Identity Card (CIE) at any municipality in Italy.
The identity card will be delivered to the own address abroad, similar to applications submitted through a consular office. Applicants may also choose either to collect the card in person from the municipality or to request that it be sent to an address in Italy.
