For the repatriation of ashes to Italy it is necessary to apply – through this Office – for relevant consular declaration and seal (to be placed on the casket containing the ashes), only after we have obtained the relevant authorization from the appropriate Italian Authorities.
In order to start the process this Office shall require (send PDF scans by email to anagrafe.consedimburgo@esteri.it):
- Full details of the deceased (complete name, place and date of birth / by means of copy of passport);
- The cause, place and date of death (by means of submitting full extract of death certificate);
- Details relating to the cremation (by means of submitting ‘cremation certificate’);
- Details regarding the place of interment and airport of entry.
Once in possession of relevant authorization we shall arrange for a suitable date for the casket to be taken to this Italian Consulate General for relevant consular seal.
All documentation required shall be submitted in original to this Italian Consulate General when calling in for the purposes of placing the ‘consular seal’ on the casket.
ORIGINAL DOCUMENTATION REQUIRED:
(please note the original documents must be lodged with this Consulate and cannot be returned)
- FULL EXTRACT OF DEATH CERTIFICATE – duly LEGALISED by means of APOSTILLE (see HERE);
- CREMATION CERTIFICATE (in original format) – duly LEGALISED by means of APOSTILLE (see HERE).
The CONSULAR FEES applicable shall have to be verified with this Office when applying for relevant authorization, and must be paid in full when calling in personally at this Office – by means of cash, debit card, or (only from “FUNERAL DIRECTORS”) cheque payable to the Italian Consulate General.
