Certificate of citizenship

IMPORTANT: a consular citizenship certificate is a standard certificate and DOES NOT include effective dates. For this reason, if you need a citizenship certificate to register the birth certificate of a minor, it MUST be requested directly from the Italian Comune of AIRE registration, as the Comune possess all information relating to effective date.

For all other purposes (except for registering the birth certificate of a minor) a citizenship certificate can only be requested by Italian citizens duly registered with AIRE and only by post at the following address:

Citizenship Office
Italian Consulate General
Italy House
20-22 East London Street
Edinburgh – EH7 4BQ

To request a citizenship certificate you must send the following:

  • Application form (click HERE)
  • Photocopy of ITALIAN passport or ID (pages with photo and signature)
  • Payment  by Postal Order ONLY(do not send cash nor cheques) to “Italian Consulate General” (please write your name at the back of the Postal order). For the relevant fees click HERE

Once issued, the certificate will be sent to your address by ordinary post (2nd class). If you prefer to receive your certificate by special delivery or signed for, you must also include a self addressed prepaid envelope.
